Teens today enjoy many advance technologies that make their life easier and more fun. They have different kinds of gadgets to use that allow them to get in touch with friends from around the globe in real time, play games, find places to eat and entertain themselves and buy things they want online.

Unfortunately, these young people are not safe all the time while surfing the net. With hackers and other people with criminal intent lurking around, parents need to inform their teens about the dangers of going online and about the need to install security software. It’s best to be extra cautious and use apps that can protect one’s safety online.

“Installing security apps are necessary to prevent child bullying and other forms of child abuse online,” said lawyer Samantha Greene, one of the leading San Diego child abuse attorneys. “Parents need to take the lead in ensuring that their children use tools to protect themselves especially while they’re away from home,” she added.

Here are some security apps that teens must use in their laptops.

K-9 Browser

This is a free app that works as a browser instead of their usual internet browser. What it does is block adult content on your computer as well as on mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod and Android. This is also recommended for parents who often get worried about the content their teens view and read online.

Secunia Personal Software Inspector

Secunia is a security vendor that helps users monitor software issues. It offers a free personal software inspector (PSI) product for home use that can scan your personal computer, download current vulnerabilities file and notify you of any software with no security patches. It also alerts you if any software is out of date and no longer supported by the vendor.

SpywareBlaster

To protect your laptop against spyware, use SpywareBlaster from Javacool Software. This tool prevents the installation of Active-X-based spyware as well as browser hijackers and other malware. It is also capable of blocking spyware cookies.

LAlarm

LAlarm is an alarm security software for laptops that run on Windows and is free for personal use. It helps users set up different kinds of alarm to prevent their device from being stolen. It features a theft alarm, perimeter alarm, inattention alarm, battery alarm, disk alarm, data destruction and recovery facility.

TrueCrypt

Encrypting important data stored on your laptop is always a must as this will enable you to prevent anybody from hacking in to your computer. TrueCrypt is an open-source tool you can use for Windows.

YawCam

This is a webcam software that works by turning your webcam into a motion-sensing tool. It will help you monitor people attempting to access your laptop when you are not around. Other features available are the automatic emailing and FTP uploading of images that it captures.

iAlertU

iAlertU is a laptop security software for Mac users. It has the ability of using the iSight camera to sense motion and raise alarms. Lockdown is another security app for Mac that is based on iAlertU but with a nicer-looking interface.
